The cyclist Britons Geraint Thomas and cyclist Adam Yates has hopes of winning the Giro d’Italia, but their hopes have disappeared after motorbike of a police caused them to crash on the ninth stage on Sunday.
It was won by Nairo Quintana.
Spanish teammate Mikel Landa and Welshman Thomas, who were joint leaders of Team Sky for the Giro, at the time suffered significant time losses after the crash, which took place inside the final 15 KM of the stage of 149km extended from Montenero Di Bisaccia and ended at Blockhaus.
Similarly, Yates (Orica-Scott) with a solo victory took full advantage. During the race, the motorbike of a police had pulled to the road’s left side of the Thomas and Yates while approaching to the concluding 13.6km stage ascent of Blockhaus.
The peloton was quickly travelling and spread to the full width across the asphalt. And for Wilco Kelderman there remained no place to go.
Meanwhile, he hit the stationary bike and fell down, wiping out Team Sky squad adjacent to him, including Landa and Thomas.
When asked about the incident, Thomas said: “It was ridiculous, we were all near to the closing stage and racing to the bottom of the climb and it happened, that should not happen.” He said “I know there was someone ahead of me hit the motorbike and we went down. In the incident, my shoulder also popped out.”
“For some time, I was hard to believe that something like this has happened. We were in good position and we’re racing in speed and were feeling good, then suddenly, I crashed. After that the Race got over, for me it is really a big disappointment.”
Geraint too had the same feeling, he said,”We were in speed and had no place to go. A bike hit the motorbike and we all fell down and lost the race. This is what I can say.”
